BIOGRAPHY  OF   D.S.OWENS  -  FINE  ART  COLOR AND BLACK  AND  WHITE  PHOTOGRAPHER

Picture
DS is the founder of Mind’s Eye Photography, established in 2001 in Aiken, South Carolina. Over the past 24 years, he has built a reputation as a dedicated and accomplished photographer. He is an active member of several local and regional arts organizations, including the Aiken Artist Guild, the Art Association of Ridge Spring, the North Augusta Artist Guild, and is a juried member of the Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta. He is also a proud juried member of the
South Carolina Artisans Center—designated in 1998 as
“The Official Folk Art and Craft Center of South Carolina”—where he has been affiliated for over 15 years.

Photography is DS’s fourth career, following roles as a mechanical engineer, automobile dealer, and real estate broker. Despite his varied professional background, his passion for photography—sparked during his service in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War—remained a constant. While often recognized as a landscape photographer, his portfolio spans multiple genres, including street, abstract, and travel photography. Today, he is guided by instinct and inspiration, photographing whatever captures his eye. His creative drive stems from a deep love for the craft and a desire to preserve moments in time.

DS believes that the “Art of Seeing” is essential to great photography—and that this skill can be cultivated by anyone. His talent and dedication have earned him 83 awards and four selections as an Artist-in-Residence by South Carolina State Parks. His work is part of permanent collections at the Aiken County Government Center, the Aiken Center for Recovery (as of November 2022), and four South Carolina State Parks. His photographs are also held in numerous private collections and have been published both nationally and internationally.
