NORTH AUGUSTA — Landscapes, black and white still images and even owls are on display as three men have their art in an exhibit with a funny name.
Three Old Men and Their Cameras is a special photography exhibit that features the art work of three local photographers and shows each photographer's different skills and interest.
The exhibit which has been on display since April 6 features the photography of Andy Hunter “The Drone Guy, D.S. Owens “The Landscaper” and Doug Dooley “The Bird Guy." Each photographer shows a different technique of photography. From black and white landscape images, to close up pictures of a moth, the exhibit has a lot to offer.
A reception was held April 16 at the Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta in which people could hear the men talk about their artwork.
Hunter mostly does drone photography and landscapes, Owens mostly does black and white photography and landscaping and Dooley mostly photographs bugs and other insects. Dooley also takes photographs of animals such as owls.
Playing on the name of the exhibit, all of the photographers are older with two of them being in their 80s.
The idea to start the exhibit was the idea from Dooley who approached Hunter and Owens about having an exhibit together. Owens was kind of hesitant at first because he didn't want to because he just did an exhibit and had no plans to do anymore, but he finally gave in and decided to do it.
“He was just tickled to be in the mix with it," Owens said.
Owens has been doing photography for a very long time and it kind of started for him when he was deployed during the Vietnam War.
“I started seeing the cameras more and so I got on the quest to buy me a good one," Owens said.
Owens still has that camera, but doesn’t use it that much.
Owens, who spend most of his life working as a mechanical engineering, never let the photography bug go and in his retirement he has been able to do it more.
“Photography was always a love and that I really didn’t realize how much I did enjoy until much later," he said.
Hunter became interested in photography when he was in middle school and remembers a time when he did photography in college.
He has been retired for the last 10 years and now has more time to do his photography. When he was a pastor at a local church in the area, Hunter took a lot of photos of church members, but took his art to a new level after artist Jim Harrison saw his work.
Hunter said he gives his photos away as gifts and sees a spiritual connection with his art.
Hunter mostly uses his drone to take photos of various places in North Augusta like the North Augusta Greeneway and Hammond's Ferry. All of his images are done digitally.
“I ride my e-bike around and I have my drone in the back and I just take pictures all the time,” he said. “It’s my therapy.”
He said photography has become an outlet for him and it can also bring emotion to others.
“I can just throw it up in the sky and do that," he said.
Hunter really didn’t have to prepare for the exhibit, but instead he used work from his massive inventory to put in the art exhibit.
Hunter was the one who came up with the name Three Old Men and Their Cameras after he got the inspiration from the 1980s movie "Three Men and a Baby."
He said the essence of art, like photography, can be used to educate and inform an audience.

“Drawn to the Light” Wins 3nd Place at Eye Wide Open Photography Exhibit
I'm honored to share that my photograph Drawn to the Light received 3nd Place in the 4th Annual Eye Wide Open Juried Photography Exhibition, featuring the work of 20 extraordinary and well-known photographers from across the CSRA.
Many thanks to the North Augusta Arts & Heritage Center for hosting this outstanding show, and to juror Gerald Woods for his thoughtful recognition.
A few words about the image:
I didn’t stop for this photo because the light was perfect — I stopped because it was true.
The fog had pulled a curtain over the landscape, but it couldn’t dim the presence of the light.
That single bare tree, centered and quiet, seemed to hold the entire scene together.
To me, it’s a reminder that light doesn’t always reveal everything — just enough to keep us moving forward.
